Mardi Gras Dwarf Abelia
Abelia grandiflora 'Mardi Gras'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6a-9b  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Abelia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

A dramatic evergreen flowering shrub and sure to be an eye-catcher, the Mardi Gras Dwarf Abelia forms bright glowing mounds of nearly white foliage that brighten up the landscape. Upon closer observation, you'll notice that the white leaves are centered in green while the new leaves are tinged in bright pink. Summer through fall, clusters of fragrant pink-tinted white bell-shaped flowers enjoyed by butterflies and hummingbirds emerge from deep-pink to almost red sepals that contrast beautifully with the bright foliage. The foliage takes on pink hues during the winter. Unlike some other variegated Abelia varieties, Mardi Gras does not lose its variegation over time. Leaves are most colorful in full to mostly sun.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Mardi Gras Abelia is exceptionally versatile and has many uses in the landscape. Growing only 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, it fits nicely as an accent or specimen in smaller landscape spaces, also doing quite well in medium to large size pots, provided the drainage is good. In larger landscape spaces, we use it in small to large groupings or mass plantings on embankments or as a low hedge. It's the perfect choice for underplanting a crape myrtle, taller growing upright Japanese maples, chaste tree (Vitex), or other small trees. Stunning when combined with other plants and trees that have purple, red or dark green foliage, such as Loropetalumspurple leaved Crape myrtles, and red-leaved Japanese maples.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for solid hedges, 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Mardi Gras Abelia is very easy to grow in average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. The best flowering and foliage color occur in full to mostly sun. The flowers are produced on the current seasons new growth so spring pruning won't effect bloom. It is evergreen in the southern zones where it grows and might be semi-deciduous in zones north of 7a-7b.
