Lucy Rose of Sharon
Hibiscus syriacus 'Lucy'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-9b  Find Your Zone >

Special Attributes

Lucy is the best and strongest growing red-flowering Rose of Sharon we've grown. Its bright fuchsia-red flowers cover the plant from early to mid summer and in to fall. Lucy has performed extremely well in our gardens here in Zone 8a of mid-Georgia and is a magnet for butterflies and hummingbirds. If at all possible, make sure to plant it where you can watch them swarm the flowers throughout summer and in to fall!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8-10 feet tall with a spread to about 6-8 feet, Lucy Rose of Sharon is ideal for use in smaller garden spaces where some height is needed. Grow it as a shrub or remove some lower branches to form a very attractive small tree. Pruning is best done before new leaves emerge in late winter or early spring.

Spacing:  6' for solid hedge; 10' for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Rose of Sharon are very easy to grow and maintain. Simply plant them where the sun shines most of the day. Some light shade is tolerated but too much shade and plants will become leggy and flowering is diminished. They are not too particular about soil type and very drought tolerant once established. They require little if any pruning, though a stray or broken branch can be removed any time of year.
