Special Attributes

Don't let the name of this plant fool you, it might be small (3 to 4 feet tall and wide), but it can have a big impact in your landscape. More on that below under Landscape Uses.

Unlike some of it's large to giant cousins, 'Little Giant' is a cute little slow-growing American arborvitae cultivar with a distinctive globe shape of flat sprays of attractive, lacy little green leaves. Plants in our gardens have grown to 3 feet tall in 10 years and might reach 4 feet at maturity.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing naturally and slowly in a dense, globe shape about 3-4 feet tall and wide at maturity, the Little Giant Arborvitae is ideal for use as an accent, for framing entryways, in groupings, or as a hedge in sunny home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Perfect for use in the ground or in pots to frame the front door or other entryways. A fine addition to conifer and topiary gardens.

Spacing:  2 to 2.5' for hedges; 5 feet or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Being North American natives plants, Arborvitae are very easy to grow and care for. They are adaptable to many soil types, including clay, and like full sun to part shade. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Maintenance is minimal with no pruning ever required.
