Special Attributes

Koto-no-Kaori is a simple but impressive small to mid-size camellia hybrid that produces a multitude of fragrant, deep rose-pink cup-shaped flowers with prominent bright yellow center stamens in winter and early spring. It has a long bloom period with flowers appearing in mid-winter lasting through early spring. The lustrous, dark green leaves provide a wonderful backdrop and contrast for the flowers. To enjoy them indoors, display several cuttings in a vase or use just one flower to float in a bowl of water. Its name translates to "Fragrance of Ancient City."

Landscape & Garden Uses

A smaller growing Camellia with an upright open habit of growth to 6-8 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide, Koto-no-Kaori can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a hedge or background plant, in groupings, and is especially nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall.) As a tree it serves well as a focal point specimen in home foundation plantings and smaller garden spaces. Great for cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors overwinter for those who live above USDA Zone 6a, where not winter hardy. Find Your Zone

Spacing:  4-5' for solid hedge; 10'+ for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
