Special Attributes

Koi is a rare bamboo with very unique and colorful canes. The canes emerge green turning to yellow with a green stripe in the sulcus groove as they age. Patterned striping on the sides alternate up and down the cane. The culm nodes are compacted giving this species a great look on larger canes. Providing additional interest are the occasional variegated leaves.

Its low branching makes Koi an ideal selection for a privacy screen. It is more aggressive in full sun providing a quicker screen.

Cultural Preferences

Koi Golden Bamboo grows well in most any average garden soil and full sun to part shade.

Koi Golden Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are "shooting," the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or a Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
