Special Attributes

The Judge Solomon Azalea is one of the best of the sun and heat-tolerant evergreen Southern Indica Azaleas. In spring, large, bright pink flowers nearly cover the large mounds of foliage. Grows more rapidly than other types of azaleas to 8' tall with an equal spread. Great for natural hedges and screens. Because they are more heat and sun tolerant than many other types of Azalea, Southern Indica Azalea are very easy to grow. They prefer a moist, well-drained, acid soil that is rich in organic matter, however are quite drought tolerant when established.  Full sun is tolerated however we think they look their best when receiving some filtered sunlight during the hottest part of summer afternoons.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a large mound 6 to 8 feet tall and wide, Judge Solomon Azalea is most useful as a natural hedge or in small to large groupings in landscape borders. The plants perform exceptionally well under tall pine trees. Also ideal for use as accents, corner plants or as espalier against large open walls in home foundation plantings. Can also be "limbed up" to form a small tree for containers or garden beds. A fine addition to Azalea gardens and purple-themed color gardens.

Spacing:  5' for solid hedges;  12' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Southern Indica Azaleas are easy to grow. They prefer a moist but well-drained, acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and full sun to part shade. That said, full sun is tolerated however we think they perform and look their best when receiving some filtered sunlight during the hottest part of summer afternoons. When established, plants have good drought tolerance.
