Japanese Black Pine
Pinus thunbergii

Special Attributes

Japanese Black Pine is an unusual pine with an irregular form and horizontal branches. Near the coast, where it is exceptionally salt tolerant, it's a smaller tree to maybe 20 feet tall but inland can grow up to 60 feet tall under ideal conditions. The dark grey, deeply grooved bark contrasts nicely with the densely-packed, deep green needles. In spring, attractive "candles" emerge at the ends of branches providing even more interest ti an already interesting tree. These candles, which become the new branches, can be pruned by up to 50% to maintain a smaller, more dense form. Branches can be selectively removed to form interesting topiary forms.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 20 to 60 feet tall (depending on location and pruning) and maybe half as wide, the Japanese Black Pine is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or mass plantings, or as a low hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. With pruning you can create endless topiary forms that serve as interesting focal point specimens in the landscape. A must in Japanese or Asian gardens, conifer gardens, and high salt tolerance makes it perfect for seaside gardens. Also suitable for growing in large pots and is the most popular pine for bonsai.

Spacing:  25 or more feet for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Though drought tolerant when established, the Japanese Black Pine grows best in a medium moist but well-drained fertile soil in full sun. Tolerates some light afternoon shade. Has good salt tolerance. As with so many other ornamental trees, constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Does not require pruning however can be trimmed annually in late winter to maintain a smaller plant or for very interesting topiary forms.
