USDA Cold Hardiness Zones: 7a-9b  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

A compact form that fits into smaller garden spaces, Hot Flash Camellia is a fine fall-blooming selection that produces LOADS of bright red double flowers which contrast brilliantly with the bright yellow center stamens. Bloom begins mid-fall and continues into early winter. Reaching just 5-6 feet tall and wide this Camellia is perfect for use as a home foundation shrub, low to medium hedges, or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall). Its dense, lustrous, dark green foliage provides a wonderful backdrop for the bright red flowers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

A low growing Camellia sasanqua with an upright habit of growth to about 5-6 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide, Hot Flash is best grown as a shrub. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a hedge or background plant, in groupings, and is especially nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall.) Hot Flash can be "limbed up" to form a small tree grown in a container or grown in the ground where a small, colorful tree form specimen is desired.

Spacing:  4' for solid hedge; 7'+ for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
