Hopi Crape Myrtle
Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei 'Hopi'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6a-9b  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Crape Myrtle is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

'Hopi' is one of the famous 'Fauriei Hybrid' Crape Myrtle which are totally resistant to powdery mildew! Hopi's dark green foliage provides a wonderful backdrop for the gorgeous 6-7 inch long clusters of bright pink flowers throughout most of summer and into early fall. The beautiful fall leaf color is reddish orange. The bark is gray to brown which exfoliates with age providing winter interest after the leaves drop in mid to late fall.

As mentioned, because Hopi is a 'Fauriei Hybrid' it is totally resistant to powdery mildew; an unsightly disease which shows up during summer as a white powdery substance that covers the leaves on many other types of crape myrtle.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 10-12 feet tall depending on pruning, and 8-10 feet or so wide, Hopi is a mid-size Crape Myrtle that is an ideal selection for smaller garden spaces and large containers. It can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree, making it an excellent choice for use as a focal point specimen or accent in sunny home foundation plantings, landscape borders and islands, to mark both sides of entryways, or in medians. Also makes a very colorful hedge and is spectacular in groupings. Whether planted as a specimen or in groupings, this is one fine crape myrtle that is sure to stand out in your landscape. A fine addition to pink color theme gardens.

Spacing:  7' apart for solid hedge; 12'+ apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Hopi Crape Myrtle is very easy to grow. It is not picky about soil type provided the soil is well-drained. A moist but well-drained soil of average fertility is preferred. Full sun is preferred and results in heavier flower production. Light shade is tolerated but flowering will be diminished in more shade. Has shown excellent resistance to powdery mildew and is quite drought tolerant when established.
