Special Attributes

The Hoogendorn Holly is a low-growing, dense and mounding evergreen shrub with dark green shiny flat leaves that provide a unique texture in the landscape, which contrasts well with larger leaved shrubs and trees. The shrub grows about twice as wide (4 to 5 feet) as it does tall (2 to 2.5 feet) and does well in full sun or light shade. If you're looking for an attractive, low-growing evergreen shrub for home foundation plantings or a landscape border, the Hoogendorn holly is an excellent choice. Little or no pruning is required for this shrub to maintain its naturally dense, mounding form.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Its naturally dense and mounding form to about 2 feet in height and 4 feet wide makes the Hoogendorn Holly one of the best evergreen shrubs for use in home foundation plantings, as a low evergreen hedge, in groupings or mass plantings, or as a front-facing plant in landscape borders. With occasional pruning or shearing it can be kept to about half its mature size. Hoogendorn is also useful as an underplanting for mid-size trees such as crape myrtles and Japanese maples, as a low-growing natural to formal hedge, or sheared to form domes, squares and rectangles, and various other geometrical shapes.

Suggested Spacing:  3 to 3.5' for solid hedges;  7' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Helleri Holly is easy to grow in sites that provide moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. We suggest a minimum of 5 hours or more of direct sun. As with so many other types of ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot or other harmful plant diseases. Where there is a soil drainage concern take measures to improve drainage.
