USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 7a-9b  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Winter Daphne is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, it's not the easiest plant to grow in containers, much preferring growing in the ground. But hey, with tender loving care it can be done!

Special Attributes

Winter Daphne is a superstar of an evergreen flowering shrub. When Winter Daphne begins to bloom in late winter it heralds - with its intoxicating perfume - the promise of spring. It's attractive, glossy, evergreen, deep green leaves are densely-packed on rounded mounds reaching about 3 to 4 feet in height with an equal spread over time.

The highly fragrant blooms are crystalline white inside and out. Winter Daphne usually begins blooming sometime in January or February (depending on climate) and continues through March or April, when not mulch else is blooming. The flowers are good for cutting and last well in a flower arrangement.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a dense, rounded mound 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, the Greenleaf White Winter Daphne is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural evergreen hedge in shady landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Excellent evergreen shrub for use under the canopies of large shade trees. Plant it near windows, patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed. A fine addition to Asian gardens, fragrance gardens, woodland gardens, cottage gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  2-3' for solid hedges;  6' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Despite the remarkable variety of gardening myths about its requirements, Winter Daphne is very hardy and easy to grow. Know that it must have a well-drained soil and shade or part shade. No direct afternoon sun. In our gardens, Winter Daphne thrives in deep shade under the canopies large shade trees where not many other evergreen shrubs will grow. That said, plants will tolerate the morning sun. These plants are exceptionally drought tolerant when established. We never water the plants growing in our gardens during the winter dormant season.
