One of the most unique trees you'll ever plant and enjoy in your garden, Cotinus x 'Grace' is a magnificent small Smoke Tree, or what some call Smokebush, that gets its name from the large, smoke-like pink flower "puffs" that nearly cover the tree during summer. But the color show isn't only about the unique flowers as the attractive foliage of 'Grace' distinguishes it from from other varieties in the genus. Ovate to obovate Eucalyptus-like leaves to 3 inches long emerge a lovely wine red in spring, gradually maturing to a smoky purplish-plum-red in summer. The leaves hold their color well throughout the season turning a striking reddish-orange in fall before dropping for winter. A site to behold in the garden!

Landscape & Garden Uses

A moderate grower with a broad and rounded form, the Grace Smoke Tree will eventually top out at about 15 feet, making it a great choice for a number of planting options throughout the landscape or garden. It can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree. Because of its uniqueness, we usually suggest using it as a focal point specimen in the landscape, as we do with Japanese Maples. That said, Grace is also nice in groupings or or plant one on either side to accentuate an entryway. A fine addition to rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  8 feet apart for hedges;  16 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

The Grace Smoke Tree is very easy to grow, adapting well to a variety of soil types provided the soil is well-drained. Drought tolerant when established however constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. The best foliage color is achieved in full sun however will tolerate some light shade.
