USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6a-11  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Bamboo is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Introduced in the US in 1882, and still one of the best bamboo for use as a privacy screen or fence, Golden Bamboo is a fast grower that provides a thick, impenetrable barrier when left untrimmed.  The culm nodes are compacted giving this species a great look on larger culms. The strong, upright canes are light green but will turn golden when exposed to direct sun light.

In colder regions, this species forms tight groves versus the more open groves in warmer climate zones. Culms are excellent wood quality and the new shoots are edible.

Golden Bamboo This beautiful bamboo will drop foliage when temps drop to around 5 degrees F. Canes can be killed when temps drop to -5. Unless temps drop to -30 degrees F. the root system of established well mulched groves will put up new canes each Spring.

Cultural Preferences

Golden Bamboo requires regular water but be careful not to overwater.  These bamboo thrive in moist and well-drained soil and should be planted in a shelter and sunny area.  They tolerate most soil types but do not grow well when the soil is constantly wet or boggy soil.  These Bamboos are not drought tolerate and do not thrive in extremely dry conditions.

Golden Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are "shooting," the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or a Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
