Special Attributes

Red flowered hydrangeas are hard to come by, however this one is close - and it's a glowing beauty you can see from a mile away! Glowing Embers produces an abundance of  dazzling, brilliant, hot dark pink to nearly-red blooms during summer. It's large, lustrous, deep green leaves provide an excellent backdrop for the exciting, eye-catching blooms. The blooms are carried on strong stems making them great for fresh or dried cut flower arrangements.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing naturally 4 to 5 feet tall and wide in a rounded mound, Glowing Embers Hydrangea is a great cultivar for garden beds or container culture. It provides great texture and color as an accent in home foundation plantings and in flowering shrub borders and perennial gardens. It is especially stunning in small to large groupings or as a dramatic, colorful hedge.

Spacing:  3-4' for hedges; 7' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Glowing Embers Hydrangea are easy to grow in average, moist but well-drained soil. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. This hydrangea will tolerate full sun in northern zones however appreciates some afternoon shade or filtered sun in warmer southern zones. We recommend at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun for best flowering.

Note:  Glowing Embers is a Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its flowers from buds that formed on "old wood" (during the previous year). This means that even though it is tempting to cut them back in the winter, when they are only bare sticks jutting out of the ground, don't do it. The flower buds are already formed and hidden in those bare sticks, so don't cut them off if you want flowers.
