Special Attributes

Korean Spice Viburnum, Viburnum carlesii, is well known for its large, fragrant snowball-shaped flower clusters produced in abundance during the spring season. Pink flower buds open to gorgeous aromatic white clusters 4 inches across that fill your garden with wonderful fragrance. Red berries that follow the blooms and handsome dark green leaves add to the appeal. Can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches removed to form an attractive, small specimen tree. Make sure to plant this one near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor areas where the fragrance can be enjoyed from up close.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at maturity, Korean Spice Viburnum can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree that is ideal for use as an eye-catching specimen in landscape borders. Also useful to frame corners, accentuate entryways, or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, cut flower gardens, flowering shrub borders and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing: 6 feet for solid hedge; 12 feet or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Viburnum is very easy to grow in most any average, most but well drained soil and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil of average fertility. As with so many other ornamental plants, it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. Very drought tolerant when established and we've seen no serious pest or disease problems. Deer haven't touched it in our gardens. For best flowering, at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
