Special Attributes

Forest Green is a hardy Anise that has demonstrated tolerance to full sun or shade in our central Georgia gardens. No other anise we've grown does this well in full sun. The shiny, evergreen foliage has a delightful fragrance reminiscent of root beer with a touch of licorice. Can be grown as a large shrub or left to grow naturally can be limbed up to form a small tree. With minimul pruning it can be kept much smaller and serves as a great natural hedge in sun or shade. Grows 4-5' in ten years, eventually to a large pyramid to 15' or more when left to grow naturally. This Anise is often listed as hardy only to zone 8 but various reputable sources say 6A. It handled 3 degrees F in our gardens with no damage at all.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Forest Green Anise is useful in the landscape as a specimen shrub or small tree, in groupings, or as an informal, low hedge in sunny or shady areas of the garden. Forest Green Anise is great for use on the corners, between windows or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in foundation plantings. Other Landscape / Garden Uses include as an Accent, in Containers/Planters, in a Flowering Shrub Border, in plant Groupings, as Natural Hedges, in Home Foundation Plantings, as Landscape Borders, a Specimen or along a Woodland Border.  Landscape themed landscapes such as Perennial Gardens, Rock Gardens, Shade Gardens, Tropical Look Gardens, Woodland Gardens and Wildlife Gardens are natural habitats for these shrubs.

Cultural Preferences

Forest Green Anise is very easy to grow in well-drained, moist soils that are rich in organic matter and full sun to part shade. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch however can be clipped to control height.
