Special Attributes

Florida Sunshine Anise is a brilliant beacon in the shade garden - guaranteed to brighten the shady to partially shaded areas of your garden with its bright yellow foliage. The evergreen leathery leaves are glossy and elongated ovals, emerging a bright chartreuse and maturing to a mild chartreuse or yellow-green. As the weather cools in the fall, the leaf color brightens to screaming yellow. During the same time, the upper stems take on a brilliant red cast, contrasting vividly with the leaves. In late spring, white flowers are borne from the branches. Each blossom has many tepals (false petals, and dangles downward. The penny-size fruits ripen from an olive color to brown and have the scent of anise, when crushed. They look like tiny pumpkins. The shrub attains an upright (5' x 5'), rounded shape with open branches, especially in very shady situations and is highly deer resistant.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing upright to 4-5 feet tall and wide, Florida Sunshine Anise is useful in the landscape as a specimen shrub or small tree, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny or shady areas of the garden. Also ideal for use in home foundation plantings to frame corners or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) between widely-spaced windows or on windowless walls.

Suggested Spacing:  3' for solid hedges;  7' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Florida Sunshine Anise is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. For best appearance and performance we recommend some shade in the afternoon. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch. That said, plants can be clipped to control height or to maintain as a hedge.
