'Flirt' Nandina
Nandina domestica  'Murasaki' PP21391'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6a-10b Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Nandina is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

The foliage of Nandina turns red only during the winter, right? Well, not anymore...at least not with the new Flirt" Dwarf Nandina from the Southern Living Plant Collection. Unlike 'Harbour Dwarf' Nandina, which is green throughout the warm season and goes to red in winter, Flirt" Dwarf, a sport of Harbour Dwarf, produces stunning red new growth during the spring, summer and fall! Then, during winter it goes almost completely red. So now you can have splashes of outstanding red color year round in the landscape! In spring, pretty panicles of white flowers rise above the low mounds of red foliage. Flirt" Nandina is sterile, which means it will not spread from seed.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing naturally to 2 feet tall and 1.5-2 feet wide, it's mounding form and beautiful foliage make Flirt Nandina an excellent choice for stunning groupings or mass plantings in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Also ideal for use to line walkways and paths. Makes a fine centerpiece or accent in container gardens. A fine addition to rock and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Spacing:  18" for solid hedge or mass plantings;  3' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Flirt Nandina is exceptionally easy to grow in most any average, moist but well drained soils and full sun to part shade. Plants are exceptionally drought tolerant when established. As with so many other shrubs, constantly wet or soggy can cause root rot and other plant diseases. Exceptionally low maintenance requiring little if any pruning. Its low water needs makes it highly suitable for Xeriscape gardening.
