Evergreen Giant Liriope
Liriope muscari 'Evergreen Giant'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6a-11  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of  USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5b, where this Liriope variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Very similar in appearance to its smaller growing Liriope cousins, but three times as big, Evergreen Giant is a spectacular grassy addition to the shade garden, but will also grow in full sun without the foliar burn common with most green-leaved Liriope cultivars. Whats more, it produces loads of violet flower spikes in summer that rise above the 18-24 inch tall gracefully arching mounds of deep green, strap-like foliage. The pretty flowers are followed by handsome black berries that the birds relish.

Adaptable to less than favorable conditions, we planted Evergreen Giant in mass under a 100 year old large pecan tree and it's performing marvelously since 2009. We also have it planted in smaller groupings throughout the gardens and as a centerpiece in container combinations. It is also an excellent selection to edge a path, walkway or drive. While many Liriope cultivars spread all over the place by underground roots, Evergreen Giant stays in a tidy mound that increases in size every year, maturing to about 3 feet wide over time.

If you are looking for toughness, good looks, and ultra-low maintenance, Evergreen Giant is hard to beat. We have never pruned our plants and they still look great!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Its clumping rather than spreading growth habit to 18-24 inches tall and 18-24 inches or so wide make Evergreen Giant Liriope the perfect choice for a border, however we have used it all over our gardens in mass plantings under trees and in other shady areas. This is a groundcover plant highly suitable for home foundation plantings. It can also be used solo or in combination with other plants in container gardens where it adds a very nice vertical accent and grassy texture.

Suggested Spacing:  18 inches for mass plantings or solid border edger;  36 inches or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Evergreen Giant Liriope is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or shade. When established it is quite drought tolerant and only requires supplemental irrigation during prolonged periods of severe drought. It performs equally as well in full sun as it does shade. If you are looking for toughness and good looks, Emerald Goddesss Liriope is hard to beat!
