Special Attributes

Native to Europe and North Africa, European Fan Palm, also known as the Mediterranean Fan Plam, is one of the small bush types. One of the most cold hardy palms, it is cold hardy as far north as USDA Zone 7b, and possibly 7a with protection during severe winters. The trunks of this palm will reach about 5 feet tall in cooler regions and maybe twice that height in tropical or subtropical regions. The palmate (fan) leaves expand to up to 3 feet across and form a rounded shrub.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide (depending on climate), the European Fan Palm is ideal for use as a tropical accent or in small groupings or as a hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Because of its slow growth rate, it is ideal for growing in containers that can be situated on a terrace, patio, deck, or around swimming pools and other outdoor living spaces. If preferred, suckers may be removed from the base to form a small tree.

Spacing:  4-6' apart for hedge; 12' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

European Fan Palm is easy to grow in most any well-drained soil and full sun or shady areas. It may also be grown in conservatories and greenhouses where it is very tolerant of high temperatures. Additionally, it withstands strong winds and salt spray making it an ideal palm for coastal gardens.
