Eastern Redbud
Cersis canadensis

Special Attributes

One of our favorite tree species for growing in sun or shade, the Eastern Redbud is an elegant North American native tree known as the "harbinger of spring." In late winter or early spring, it's branches become literally smothered in pea-like bright purple flowers creating a dramatic display in the landscape. But this tree's beauty doesn’t end with the spring flower show. Immediately after flowering it's beautiful, heart-shaped bright green leaves emerge to warm your own heart. The leaves mature to an olive green and then finally to golden-yellow in fall before dropping to show off the very handsome, spreading and often flat-topped crown of unique and irregular grey branches. A magnificent tree that deserves a spot in every North American garden where it will grow! USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 4a-9b  Find Your Zone

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 20 to 30 feet tall and wide, the Eastern Redbud is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny or shady landscape or woodland borders. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and to provide beauty and some shade around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces.

Suggested Spacing:   30' or more for space between trees

Cultural Preferences

The Eastern Redbud tree is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and full sun or shade. It is very drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic.
