Special Attributes

Dwarf Variegated Aucuba is a compact evergreen shrub that features large, oval, glossy, dark green leaves that look as though they've been speckled with yellow paint. They're perfect for use in shady areas of the landscape, growing well even under the dense canopies of large shade trees. Also great for an evergreen accent in shady perennial gardens and containers. Scarlet red berries follow inconspicuous flowers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 feet tall and wide and handling dense shade to part shade, Dwarf Variegated Aucuba is ideal as an accent or in groupings under the canopies of large shade trees and in other shady areas. They are also great for use in landscape borders and home foundation plantings as an accent, natural hedge, or in small to large groupings. It's tropical-looking evergreen leaves make it a fine selection to bring a feel of the tropics to your landscape. A fine addition to perennial shade gardens, or rock gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Spacing:  2-3' for solid hedges;  6' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Aucuba are very easy to grow and care for. They thrive in most any well-drained soil and full shade to part shade. Morning sun is okay but avoid the direct afternoon sun, which can scald the leaves. As with so many other ornamental shrub, Aucuba does not like constantly soggy or wet soils.
