Globosa Nana Dwarf Global Cryptomeria
Cryptomeria japonica 'Globosa Nana'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6a-9b  Find Your Zone >

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Cryptomeria is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. Requires a well-lit space for overwintering indoors.

Special Attributes

'Globosa Nana' is a dwarf form of Cryptomeria japonica with you guessed it, a global shape. It is an attractive evergreen shrub that needs no pruning to achieve its naturally rounded shape. The uniquely textured foliage is bright green when young maturing to a medium green. During the cool season the foliage takes on a bronze cast.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound to about 4 to 5' tall and wide, Dwarf Global Cryptomeria is ideal for use as a specimen, in grouping, or as a hedge in landscape borders. That said, in design, we probably use it more in home foundation plantings than anywhere else. Plant one on both sides of the front door or steps, or at the beginning of a walkway, to accentuate these entryways. Also makes a very nice solo or centerpiece on containers of 14 inches or more in diameter. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian theme gardens, and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3.5' for solid hedges; 8' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Cryptomeria is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. It never needs pruning and is very drought tolerant when established. We've seen no serious disease or insect problems and the deer that visit our gardens won't touch it.
