Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Japanese holly is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Drops of Gold is a very unique Japanese Holly in that it produces bright, golden-yellow outer leaves that light up the landscape. These outer golden leaves are a striking contrast to the dark green leaves beneath and to other shrubs with green, red, orange, blue or purple foliage. The shrub forms a compact mound of densely-packed leaves and is ideal for use in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. The plant responds well to shearing however it grows so dense on its own that we rarely if ever prune it.

Landscape & Garden Uses

growing in a dense, mounding form about 3-4 feet tall and 4 feet wide, the Drops of Gold Japanese Holly is ideal for use in home foundation plantings. It's also useful as an underplanting for mid-size trees such as crape myrtles and Japanese maples, as a low-growing natural or formal hedge, as a specimen in small to medium landscape spaces, in groupings or mass plantings, or sheared to various geometrical shapes. That said, we tend to let this golden beauty grow naturally to maintain its bright, outer leaves. Any pruning should be performed in late winter or early spring prior to the flush of new spring growth.

Spacing:  2.5 to 3' for solid hedges;  5-6' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Drops of Gold Holly is easy to grow in sites that provide a moist but well-drained soil and full sun to light shade. For best foliage density, 6 hours or more of direct sun light is recommended. As with so many other types of ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot or other harmful plant diseases. Where there is a soil drainage concern, either improve drainage or plant in raised beds to ensure proper drainage.
