Special Attributes

Heralding the arrival of spring with a profusion of 1.5 inch diameter glowing red flowers that begin opening in late winter up and down the bare branches and continue well into spring, the Crimson and Gold Quince is a showy flowering shrub anyone can grow. At the center of each crimson red flower are prominent bright golden anthers that add an amazing pop of color, hence the name. Cut budded branches are excellent for forcing in indoor flower arrangements. Following the flowers are fragrant 2 inch diameter greenish fruits, which are edible but best used for quince jellies and jams. Quince are hardy and long-lived plants that once established are exceptionally drought tolerant.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the Crimson and Gold Quince is an ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a low hedge for eye-popping color in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Excellent companions are other early spring bloomers such as ForysthiaTulip Tree Magnolias (tulip trees), Camellia Japonica, and Reeves Spirea. A fine addition to red theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedges;  8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Quince are exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained to somewhat dry soil of average fertility, preferring a loamy soil. Plants are very drought tolerant when established. Flower production is best in full to mostly sun, however plants will tolerate part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering. The flowers are born on old growth (last years branches) so wait to prune until after flowering.
