Confederate Jasmine
Trachelspermum jasminoides

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 7a-10b  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Jasmine is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, this vine grows quickly so you might have to cut it back some before bringing it indoors.

Special Attributes

The Confederate Jasmine Vine produces an abundance of highly fragrant white, star-shaped flowers from spring through early summer that fill the air with sweet aroma. It is a fast-growing, twining, evergreen vine that will grow or climb up to 10 to 15 feet in a relatively short period of time.

Confederate Jasmine is not too picky about soil. It will tolerate somewhat damp soils but is also exceptionally drought tolerant. It prefers growing in sun but will appreciate some afternoon shade in the South.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 feet or more tall or long and 2 to 4 feet wide, Confederate Jasmine is an ideal selection for use to climb along the top of fences, on a trellis, on a mailbox, over an arbor or any other structure that might benefit from or support the flowering vine. It can also be useful as a ground cover for slopes or banks where it can sprawl and naturalize or to climb into smaller trees where early flowering is especially noticeable.

Spacing Recommendations:  2-3' along fences

Cultural Preferences

Confederate Jasmine tolerates a wide range of soils. It will tolerate somewhat damp soils but is also quite drought tolerant when established. It prefers growing in sun but will tolerate some afternoon shade. In warmer climates the vine would appreciate a little break from the hottest part of the afternoon sun. Avoid pruning prior to the flowering season or you will cut off the flower buds. Fertilize once a year with a well balanced slow release fertilizer.
