Ice Dance Sedge Grass - Carex Grass
Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance'

USDA Cold Hardiness Zones: 5a-9b  Find Your Zone >

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Carex is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Carex "Ice Dance" Sedge is one of a very few variegated  ornamental grasses that will grow in shade. It is prolific and breeds like a bunny rabbit. Unlike Carex 'Variegata', 'Ice Dances' spreads instead of forming a clump. The attractive, slender, shiny dark green leaf blades are outlined in white and form neat arching clumps in the garden, eventually filling in to form a solid mass. The 1/2" wide dark green leaves with clear white borders are wonderful to brighten the woodland or shade garden. The moderately spreading habit makes 'Ice Dance' great for covering the woodland floor. The rate of spread is just perfect...not fast enough to become a problem, but not slow enough to try your patience... a great addition!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Ice Dance Sedge is great for use in containers, or as a slowly spreading groundcover in the shade and rock garden.  We have used it all over our gardens in mass plantings under trees and in other shady to part shaded areas, and in pots. It is highly suitable as an accent, in groupings, or massed as a groundcover in foundation plantings. It also adds a nice accent in container gardens where it's grassy texture and bright color compliments other plants. Looks especially nice when combined with plants that have purple, red, orange, blue or dark green foliage.

Spacing:  10-12 inches for mass plantings or solid border/edging; 24 inches or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Ice Dance Sedge Grass is easy to grow and maintain. The key to success with Ice Dance Sedge is shade. Some morning sun is okay but afternoon shade is a must to prevent scalding of the foliage. In our trial gardens we have it planted underneath a shade tree near one of our garden ponds. It is adaptable to a wide range of soils and is quite drought tolerant once established. If desired, the foliage can be cut back to the ground in early spring before new growth occurs.
