Butcher's Broom Plant (Ruscus) - 1 Gallon Pot
Ruscus aculeatus, or Butcher's Broom, is an attractive and highly unusual evergreen shrub that will surely be a conversation piece in the garden. The reason is that what you see as leaves on the plant are not leaves. The actual leaves are tiny. The ovate, thick, spiny-tipped, glossy dark green leaf-like structures are flattened leaf-like shoots (modified stems) called cladophylls, on which the flowers and berries are produced. Waxy, bright red berries follow the inconspicuous gray-white flowers. The plant forms a gradually spreading mound to about 2 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, making it a good choice for grouping, border, or low hedge in partially to fully shaded spaces. Hardy in USDA Zones 7a to 9b, Butcher's Broom is heat, drought, and salt tolerant, making it an excellent addition to coastal gardens. It is also deer and rabbit resistant. Get all the details below
