Special Attributes

Just like its smaller, more well known cousin 'Dwarf Burford' the 'Burford' Holly produces lustrous dark green foliage, small white flowers in spring, and LOADS of red berries in fall and winter. But there's a big difference in size. While the Dwarf Burford Holly grows to 5 or 6 feet tall and, 'Burford' grows up to 20 feet tall and 10 feet or more wide! An excellent choice for an evergreen screen or lower branches can be removed to form an attractive and colorful small tree. Burford Holly serves as a pollinizer, however does not require a pollinizer to produce its own wonderful, bright red berries.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide, Burford Holly is ideal for use as a specimen tree, in groupings, or as a natural or formal hedge or screen planting in landscape borders. In home foundation plantings it is useful as a corner plant on taller homes or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive evergreen tree. A fine selection for bird and wildlife gardens and holly gardens.

Spacing Recommendations:  6 to 7 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants.

Cultural Preferences

The Burford Holly is exceptionally easy to grow in a wide range of soils. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and is drought tolerant when established. Grows well in full sun or part shade, however more sun brings more berries. Burford will require little if any pruning, however can be pruned to form semi-formal to formal hedges, or a can be "limbed up' to form a small, attractive tree. Note that heavy pruning after spring flowering reduces berries.
