Special Attributes

'Bracken's Brown Beauty' is a big improvement on the native Southern Magnolia. This evergreen grows to 30 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide and is noted for its dense, pyramidal form. Large, fragrant, cup-shaped white flowers up to 8 inches in diameter bloom in late spring, with sparse continued flowering throughout the summer months. Birds love the attractive red fruits that develop in cone shaped clusters late in the season. Thick, leathery, evergreen, glossy dark green leaves with copper-brown undersides are attractive year round. Handles temperatures as cold as -20°F.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing upright to 30-40 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide, Brackens Brown Magnolia has many uses in the landscape. We use it most often in evergreen screen plantings, as a focal point specimen, to frame in the corners of tall homes or other structures, or as espalier (trained to grow against a wall) on tall, open walls. Can also be grown in large pots, planters and containers of 18 inches or more in rim diameter. A fine addition to fragrance, bird, wildlife, cut flower and cottage gardens.

Spacing:  15' for solid screens;  25 feet or more for space between trees

Cultural Preferences

Brackens Brown Magnolia is very easy to grow in most an average moist but well-drained soil, preferring one that is rich in organic matter. It grows well in full sun or part shade. At least 4 hours of direct sunlight or all-day filtered sun is suggested.
