Bonza Hardy Eucalyptus Tree
Eucalyptus pauciflora 'Bonza' - Snow Gum

USDA Plant Hardiness  Zones: 6b-11

Nicknamed 'Bonza' meaning "great." In its home in the coldest regions Australia this Eucalyptus is a small to medium, patient growing tree that should be a featured ornamental in your landscape. Semi-pendulous evergreen leaves and stems take on distinctive burgundy highlights. Bonza produces white flowers in the summer. The trunk is artistically contorted; its bark is smooth with patterned white and grey patches. At maturity Bonza' can reach 30 feet in height, though the tree responds well to pruning for size control. Bonza adapts well to any soil condition, is disease resistant, long-lived and is highly rated for its cold hardiness.

Cold Hardiness

In McDonough, GA (zone 8A) a 10 month old 'Bonza' had minimal leaf damage after a winter where temps reached 6 degrees F.  In Atlanta, GA (zone 7B) a 10 month old tree that froze to the ground at 5 degrees, has recovered nicely growing 6 to 8 feet in that same year.

Landscape Uses

Growing to around 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide, Bonza Eucalyptus is a fast growing but smaller Eucalyptus tree that will beg to be planted as a focal point in your garden. Effective in groupings, as a privacy screen, and to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings. Very nice around pools, patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces.

Spacing:  12-15' for privacy screen;  30' or more for space between trees

Cultural Preferences

Big O Eucalyptus isn't too picky about soil type. It will grow in well-drained soil but can also handle waterlogged soil It will grow in full sun but is also quite shade tolerant. It is also very heat resistant and we've seen no problems with insects or disease. Responds well to pruning so size is easy to control. With all these attributes, it's no wonder this variety is a favorite!
