Blue Cone Arborvitae
We're not sure, but think that because the foliage is more green than blue, the "blue" in the name of 'Blue Cone' Arborvitae refers to the attractive, small, dusty-blue cones it produces? That said, the shape of this variety is conical, so who knows? In any event, the Blue Cone Arborvitae is a distinctive and refined tree with a conical form and dense, soft-textured, rich green foliage that contrasts nicely with all other plants in the landscape. Special Attributes

The Blue Cone Arborvitae is a distinctive and refined tree with a conical form and dense, soft-textured, rich green foliage that contrasts nicely with all other plants in the landscape. We think the "Blue" in the name refers to the blue cones it produces? Either way, its handsome evergreen foliage and upright growth habit make it a fine selection for use in medium height privacy screen plantings or to frame the corners of the home or entryways.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright, conical form 10 to 12 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Blue Cone Arborvitae is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, as a medium-height hedge or privacy scree, and to frame in the corners of homes and other buildings. Plant one on either side of the front door, or at the the end of the driveway, to accentuate these and other entryways. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and formal gardens. Can also be grown in pots, planters and other containers and serves well as an outdoor decorated Christmas tree.

Spacing:  5' for solid hedges;  10' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Arborvitae are very easy to grow and care for. They are adaptable to many soil types, including clay, and like full sun to part shade. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil. They don't like an overly dry site thought are drought tolerant when established. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any pruning ever required.
