'Black Knight' Butterfly Bush
Buddleja davidii 'Black Knight'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-9b  Find Your Zone >

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Butterfly Bushes is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Black Knight' is one of the older varieties of tall-growing Buddleia that, with the introduction of all the new dwarf varieties, is more difficult to find these days. But it's long been a favorite of ours so we continue to grow and offer it. Butterflies and hummingbirds will literally swarm to the elongated clusters of fragrant, deep purple (almost black) flowers, which begin to appear in June and continue all the way to frost at the ends of long, arching branches on plants that grow 8 to 10 feet tall by 4 to 5 feet wide. The willow-like, grayish green leaves are a wonderful contrast and backdrop for the flowers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Black Knight with its 10 foot spread works well when planted as a border,   The branches grow to 10 foot height if not pruned back in late winter or early spring.  A natural choice for butterfly and hummingbird gardens, Xeriscape gardens (low water needs, and blue-themed color gardens) and Cottage Gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 to 3' for solid hedges or mass plantings; 6-7' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Knight Butterfly Bush thrives in full to mostly sun and isn't too picky about soil type, provided the soil is well-drained. Plants are quite drought tolerant when established and deer don't like them! Great for use as a single specimen, in perennial gardens, and near sitting areas where the butterflies and hummingbirds can be viewed as they flock to the honey-scented flowers.Very easy to grow!
