Special Attributes

A cross hybrid of 'Convexa' and 'Stokes' holly, 'Beehive' is a splendid Japanese holly that forms a compact, beehive-like mound of densely-packed, tiny, dark green leaves. An excellent selection where a low growing evergreen shrub is needed in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. The plant responds well to shearing however it grows so dense on its own that we rarely if ever prune it.

Landscape & Garden Uses

It's naturally dense and mounding habit to about 3-4 feet in height and 4-5 feet wide makes the Beehive Holly one of the best evergreen shrubs for use in home foundation plantings. With occasional pruning or shearing it can be kept to about half its mature size. That said, it grows so dense on its own that we rarely if ever prune or shear it, only to remove a stray or damaged branch. Beehive is also useful as an underplanting for mid-size trees such as crape myrtle and Japanese maples, as a low-growing natural to formal hedge, or sheared to various geometrical shapes.

Spacing:  3' for solid hedges;  8' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

The Beehive Holly is easy to grow in sites that provide a moist but well-drained soil and full sun to light shade. We suggest at least 5 hours or more of direct sun light per day. As with so many other types of ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot or other harmful plant diseases. Where there is a soil drainage concern, either improve drainage or plant in raised beds to ensure proper drainage.
