Special Attributes

Our favorite among the low-growing, spreading Juniper, 'Bar Harbor' is a dense, mat forming evergreen ground cover; one of the lowest growing of the junipers at 6 inches height. The feathery, dark blue-green foliage spreads more rapidly than most junipers to 6 to 8 feet in width and turns an attractive, silvery plum-purple color during winter. Unlike other low-growing spreading junipers Bar Harbor grows uphill as well as downhill on steep slopes.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 inches tall and spreading more quickly than other junipers to 6 feet or more in width, the Bar Harbor Juniper is perhaps one of the best of the best junipers for use as a low, erosion -controlling groundcover plant on sunny slopes and embankments, in landscape borders, and home foundation plantings. It will cascade over walls and is a great choice to underplant small trees such as Japanese Maple and Crape Myrtle. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  4-6' for mass plantings; 12 feet or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Bar Harbor Juniper is easy to grow in most any well-drained soil of average to low fertility. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot and other harmful plant diseases. Best in full sun however will tolerate some light shade. We recommend at least 7 hours of direct sunlight per day.
