Special Attributes

Truly a standout in the garden, Autumn Frost Hosta Lily features neat mounds of pointed, oval, frosty-blue leaves with wide creamy to bright yellow margins. Pretty, trumpet-shaped, lavender flowers on tall stalks rise above the foliage in summer to attract hummingbirds.

Autumn Frost is a tetraploid Hosta Lily. Tetraploids have twice the chromosomes of traditional diploid Hosta varieties giving them more vigor, stronger color, better layering, and more general tolerance of adversity. Tetraploids have greater tolerance of heat, humidity, drought, wind, and cold. We rate Autumn Frost as one of the strongest, most exciting hostas in existence. So, if you're looking for a very dependable variegated Hosta to light up the shady areas of your gardens look no further. Autumn Frost is a unique and spectacular choice.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a dense mound 12 inches tall and up to 2 feet wide, Autumn Frost Hosta Lily is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, massed as a groundcover, or as a border along walkways and paths. Autumn Frost is such a strong performer for us that we have no problem at all suggesting it for use in home foundation plantings. With its smaller size it can be tucked into smaller spaces where larger growing hostas won't fit. It is perfect under large shade trees, decks, covered porches and any other shady location. Don't think you have any shade? Look on the east side of your home. Also very nice in lots, planters and other containers and a fine addition to mixed hosta gardens, hummingbird gardens, and woodland gardens.

Spacing:  16-18 inches apart for mass plantings; 3 feet apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Autumn Frost Hosta is a highly adaptable variety that is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and shade to part shade. It is a tetraploid so has better tolerance of heat, humidity, drought, wind, and cold than other hosta varieties. Morning or late evening sun or all-day filtered sun is fine. Hot afternoon sun can scald the leaves, especially in warmer climates of the South.
