Special Attributes

The tall, slender green leaves of White Cloud Muhly Grass reach 2 1/2 feet tall and 4 feet wide, an attractive sight in spring and summer but really showing off its glittering, airy plumes of silvery-white, as puffy as clouds. The cloud-like texture of these blooms adds terrific softness to the garden, and as they mature to tan in winter, birds perch to feast upon their ripening seeds. A lovely display for any sunny spot!

Landscape & Garden Uses

In our opinion, where it can be grown (USDA Zones 6a-10b), Muhly Grass is one of those "must have" plants for the landscape or ornamental grass garden. Growing 2-3 feet tall and 3 feet wide, in smaller garden spaces it can be grown as a specimen or in small groupings, however is most effective planted in larger grouping in larger landscape spaces. Because it's exceptionally drought tolerant when established, it is an ideal choice in mass plantings or large groupings on embankments, hillsides and slopes. Excellent for use in Xeriscape (low water need) gardens, rock gardens, and seaside gardens.

White Cloud' Muhly Grass is ideal for groupings or mass plantings on slopes, or as a border standout, or low hedge. It also works well in coastal gardens and containers. Its fine texture is also a nice addition in mixed container gardens with flowers and other plants that prefer a very well-drained soil.

Spacing:  2.5' for hedges or mass plantings; 5'+ for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Like it's pink cousin, White Cloud Muhly Grass is an exceptionally easy to grow and maintain. It is exceptionally resistant to heat, humidity, sun, salt, and drought. Make sure to plant it in very well-drained soil. Add sand to the planting mix if necessary to provide good drainage. Full sun is preffered for best flowering however the plant will tolerate and still flower with some light shade. If necessary, cut back foliage to ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge in spring.

If you have admired Pink Muhly Grass, you will really love its goes-with-anything white cousin. This native grass couldn't be easier to grow and the flowers are great in fresh or dried cut flower arrangements!

This fine textured native grass is effortless to grow in all but wet or boggy soils. Grows best in sandy, very well-drained soil in full to mostly sun. We recommend 6-8 hours of direct sun for best flowering of your Muhly Grass. It appreciates pampering the first year with adequate food and water to get its root system established. After this, it takes off on its own and is exceptionally drought-tolerant when established. It is also quite salt tolerant, making it an excellent choice for gardens near the sea.
