Special Attributes

If you're looking for a very unique and interesting variegated Hosta to light up the sunny or shady areas of your gardens look no further. Guacamole forms attractive compact mounds of bright apple-green leaves painted with green and blue variegation at the margins. The dense mounds of foliage are topped with beautiful, fragrant white flowers in summer that you and the hummingbirds will love. We've grown and planted a lot of Hosta in our gardens over the years and 'Guacamole' has been one of if not the best all-time performers among the variegated cultivars. It's one of the most exciting hostas to come along, as it will tolerate more sun than most and has amazing variegated foliage. We do recommend some mid-afternoon shade in warmer regions for best performance.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a dense mound 24 inches tall and up to 48 inches wide with outstanding color and texture, Guacamole Hosta is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, massed as a groundcover (deciduous) or as a border along walkways and paths to light up fully to partially shaded gardens and landscape borders. Guacamole has been so reliable and such a strong performer for us that we have no problem at all recommended it for front home foundation plantings. It is perfect under large shade trees, decks, covered porches and any other shady location as well as areas that get more sun.

Patriot Hosta can also be grown solitary or mixed with other shade loving perennials in container gardens and is a great choice for mixed hosta, hummingbird, and adding a bright splash of color to the woodland or woodland border garden.

Cultural Preferences

Guacamole Hosta adapts well to many soil types but prefers a moist, well drained soil of average fertility. It prefers mostly sun or shade, and will practically grow in the dark, so is perfect for planting under tall decks and large shade trees where not much sun shines. Most hostas prefer no afternoon sun, however Guacamole just needs a few hours of shade during mid-afternoon.
