Special Attributes

If you're looking for a very dependable variegated Hosta to light up the shady areas of your gardens look no further. We've grown and planted a lot of Hosta in our gardens over the years and 'Fire & Ice' has been one of the best all-time performers among the variegated cultivars. It's one of the most exciting hostas to come along, in a long time. It forms attractive compact mounds of slightly twisted, rich green leaves leaves with pure white centers. The dense mounds of foliage are topped with gorgeous lavender flowers in summer that your hummingbirds and butterflies will love. This one looks so good throughout the season that we have no problem recommending it for use as accents or in groupings in front home foundation plantings, or in mass plantings as a groundcover.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a dense mound 14-16 inches tall and up to 1-2 feet wide with outstanding color and texture, Fire& Ice Hosta is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, massed as a groundcover (deciduous) or as a border along walkways and paths to light up fully to partially shaded gardens and landscape borders. Fire & Ice has been so reliable and such a strong performer for us that we have no problem at all recommended it for front home foundation plantings. It is perfect under large shade trees, decks, covered porches and any other shady location. Don't think you have any shade? Look on the east side of your home.

Fire & Ice Hosta can also be grown solitary or mixed with other shade loving perennials in container gardens and is a great choice for mixed hosta, hummingbird, and white color gardens.

Spacing:  12" for mass plantings, 36" for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Fire & Ice Hosta adapts well to many soil types but prefers a moist, well drained soil of average fertility. It prefers the shade, and will practically grow in the dark, so is perfect for planting under tall decks and large shade trees where not much sun shines. That said, it will tolerate morning sun well or all-day filtered sun or dappled shade. Hot afternoon sun can scald the leaves, especially in warmer climates.
