American Beautyberry
Callicarpa americana

American Beautyberry is a fast-growing native shrubs with fragrant, fuzzy green foliage but is more prized for the colorful berries in produces. In mid-summer, each leaf axil is surrounded by loads of small, pinkish to bluish flowers followed by clumps of powerfully bright, purple berries that are shaped like samll pearls. The leaves turn yellow in the fall and the berries persist until the birds get them all. The USDA claims Beuatyberry has insecticidal properties that repel mosquitoes, ants, and other pesky critters. So you can plant this beaty of a shrub around your cabin as an ornamental and to help keep bugs away!

Although tolerant of shade and drought, the best fruiting and growth occurs with plenty of sunlight and in a fertile and moist but well drained site.
